Hi 👋🏻
I don’t know how many times Google Maps saved me. Whenever I go to a different city, the #1 tool that always helps me is Google Maps, but when the matter is of foreign cities, it’s not that easy. Because the local people might not know English, or even if they know, they might not help you that much, and on top of that, understanding Google Maps isn’t that easy every time.
But Google Maps can save you all the time only if it’s not a totally remote village. So in this edition, let’s understand how to use Google Maps and improve your travel experience.
The first hours in a new city can feel confusing
When you arrive in a new city for the first time, the first few hours often feel confusing. The streets look unfamiliar, the neighborhood around your hotel feels unclear, and even simple choices such as where to walk or where to eat take more time than expected.
Most travelers open Google Maps only after they reach the city. At that moment the map becomes a tool to solve problems one by one. You search for a restaurant, then you search for a café, and then you try to understand which direction leads to the interesting part of the city.
Because of this, the beginning of the trip usually turns into a period of searching rather than enjoying the place.
If you spend some time with the map before the trip begins, the first day in the city becomes much easier.
If you spend some time with the map before the trip
If you spend some time with the map before you leave for the trip, the city slowly begins to make sense. When you look at the map for a while, you start to notice where the main neighborhoods are located. You begin to understand where most restaurants are concentrated and where parks, rivers, or museums sit inside the city.
Because of this, the city does not feel completely unfamiliar when you arrive. The hotel location already makes sense and the surrounding streets become easier to understand.
Instead of trying to figure out everything after landing, you already have a basic picture of the city in your mind.
If you save a few places on the map earlier
If you save a few interesting places on the map before the trip begins, the map slowly turns into your own guide to the city. Restaurants that look interesting, cafés you may want to visit, bakeries, bookstores, markets, or museums can all sit on the map before the journey starts.
When several places appear on the map, you begin to see patterns. Some streets contain many interesting spots close to each other. Certain neighborhoods start to look more active and lively than others.
Because of this, it becomes easier to understand where it makes sense to spend time.
If the map already contains places near your hotel
If the map already contains a few saved cafés or restaurants around your hotel, the first evening in the city becomes simple. After a long flight you usually want something easy, a short walk to a good café or a comfortable restaurant.
When those places are already marked on the map, there is no need to stand on the street and search for options. You already know where to go.
This small preparation removes unnecessary confusion from the first day.
A small habit that improves every trip
If you spend some time with the map before departure, the city becomes easier to understand the moment you arrive. The first day moves more smoothly, decisions become easier, and the trip begins with more clarity.
Travel does not always improve through expensive upgrades or complicated planning. Sometimes a simple habit like this makes the entire experience better from the very beginning.
Thank you!
When you visit a city without any sense of its layout, every small decision takes effort. A little familiarity before arrival changes that. The city becomes easier to move through, and you spend more time experiencing it rather than figuring it out.
Thanks for reading. See you on Tuesday!
See ya!
